Sustainable Stoves
Providing access to cleaner, low cost and fuel-efficient energy to 3 billion people worldwide whilst maintaining long-held cooking practices and traditions.
What we are doing
Our solution to this huge challenge is an affordable rocket stove, which is fuel-efficient, reduces cooking time, and significantly minimises dangerous emissions into homes and the environment, all whilst maintaining the traditional smoky flavour of Fijian cooking. With goals to decrease dangerous gases that are harmful to millions of lungs and the Earth, reduce deforestation, increase energy independence and empower local community members through employment across the developing world, it’s more than just an alternate cooking method.
The design of our Buka Stove (or ‘clean stove’) allows for greater airflow leading to a more complete combustion, meaning that with an increase in heat output, the production of harmful carbon monoxide is dramatically reduced, and the amount of fuel required for the same amount of cooking is significantly less. It also works with accessible and renewable fuel sources, such as wood and biomass briquettes, and other combustible waste such as animal dung. As an additional benefit, the rocket stove enables more efficient cooking times for families, and more time spent undertaking other activities, including paid work and furthering education.
Project Everest is working in Sigatoka, Fiji and Dili, Timor-Leste, to implement this social enterprise solution within rural communities through the employment of local sales agents, further enabling local economic stability, gender equality and growth opportunities.
